Sarushima (Monkey Island)

-Beautiful Island

Sarushima Island is an uninhabited island located in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is the only uninhabited island in Tokyo Bay and its largest natural island.

On Sarushima Island, you can stroll through a precious historical heritage of Japanese history. Once a battery was installed on Sarushima Island, which played a key role in protecting Tokyo Bay during times of war. Sarushima Island was therefore used as a fortress island.

For about 60 years, public access was banned. This changed in 2015, however, when it was reopened as a National Historic Site due to the preservation as a valuable natural and historical heritage.

After a short 5-minute walk from the beautiful beach you are already surrounded by what was once a fortress area. You may notice a heavy atmosphere suddenly appearing - as on this island many have lost their lives. Barracks, batteries, long tunnels and above all brick structures built in the French method are valuable objects that only exist in a few places in Japan to date.

Of course, you may also enjoy leisure activities on Sarushima Island. You can enjoy barbecue and fishing, playing on the beach, and you can enjoy the sea in summer. Why not spend your special time on a deserted island full of seasonal charm?
